Be Like Harold

You can tell a lot about a person by the way he or she treats those under them— the so called “little people.”

Years back, I observed a summer intern at church attempt to blow off someone who had stopped by the office. I can’t remember what the older gentleman wanted on that day. He often came by, usually when you did not have time. The intern, in his youthful folly, thought that he perhaps was too important to be bothered with the interruption.

I disabused him of that sentiment.

My friend Harold had an open door policy at his company, of which he was the President. Everyone knew they could stop by his office, and he would make time for them. Harold knew everybody’s name. He prayed with employees when they were in a tough spot. His Admin Assistant said, not just that Harold was a great boss, but that he was her friend.

Trust me on this. You don’t want to be a condescending know it all who treats others shabbily. Stop thinking you are better than anybody else. You are the only one who thinks that.

You don’t want to be that person. You want to be like Harold. Shoot, we all want to be like Harold.
